I talked briefly about the great potential that the region has to offer on the International stage and thought you would be interested in knowing exactly what and where that potential lies.
First of all the athletics facilities that North Wales has to offer is second to none. The recent addition of The Indoor Track in Deeside has added an extra dimension to an athletes training possibilities, especially during the cold winter months. Here athletes can train in many events including Sprints, High Jump, Pole Vault and Shot Put. We have 3 International Outdoor tracks, at Colwyn Bay, Deeside and Wrexham. The great thing about all of these is that they are available for anyone of all abilities to use, whenever you want.
In terms of coaches, I have been lucky to train under Les Baldwin MBE and Bernie Jones, both very experienced and respected coaches in North Wales. Bernie has recently taken up a coaching role at Welsh Athletics, which is good news for the North because knowing Bernie he will be constantly fighting North Wales' case on all the big issues.
Two athletes from the region that have been making an impact over the last couple of years are James Mills (800m) and Faye Harding (Multi Events). Both of these started their training under Les Baldwin at Wrexham, and in the coming weeks I will be writing about these athletes and others from all around North Wales, so that you can get an insight into their training, racing, daily routine and hopes for the future.
I'm excited to be given this opportunity by the Daily Post, the leading newspaper in North Wales. With it's wide circulation and popularity it gives me the platform to inform and encourage people of all age groups to discuss and hopefully participate in this Sport. Over the coming months I hope to give you an insight into the structure, latest news and important issues within the region. North Wales has a great tradition in Athletics, Cross Country and Road Racing, with some great clubs and fantastic facilities.
We also have very talented athletes who have the ability to play a major part in the future of Welsh and British Athletics, so it's more important than ever that we maximise the potential that North Wales has to offer.
Although the area has a healthy participation rate, it is vitally important to keep attracting new people of all ages and abilities to the Sport, and this blog is one way of trying to raise the profile of Athletics in North Wales.
Welcome to this new North Wales Athletics Blog. This is the site that will keep you updated on the North Wales Athletics Scene, but I want to hear your views on what is going on in your area.
Tell me about your club, give me your thoughts on races, and also your opinions on the current structure of North Wales Athletics.
This is the place where the burning issues will be discussed…does North Wales get a fair deal from the Welsh Athletics governing body? Is there enough Sponsorship in the Region? Are there enough young athletes taking part? Are these athletes coming through and receiving enough support so they can reach their full potential?
The 2012 Olympics are just around the corner, will any North Wales Athletes be competing?
This is the place to put your thoughts and opinions across, so I want to hear from you!
